Heroes: May's Contest

My favorite hero is Atticus Finch. Why? Because he has Integrity with a capital I, and because I'm a sucker for good fathers. That's about as sexy as you can get in my book. Of course it helps that he was portrayed in the movie of To Kill a Mockingbird by the devastatingly handsome Gregory Peck. And that he peopled my favorite book. But anyhoo, he is my favorite hero.

While at the Romancing the Rockies conference, I received a "goodie bag" full of books. Now of course I've reserved one or two for myself. But the rest will comprise May's contest booty.

Tell me who your favorite fictional hero is and why. Winner (chosen by random drawing) will receive the remainder of my goodie bag books. Winner will be announced Tuesday, May 29th. Good luck everyone!

Bonus Points: Why I Love My Day Job:
Children Singing

This morning was a bit slower than usual, so I had the treat of spending extra time with my patients. My reward: Two little girls sang He's Got the Whole World in His Hands for me despite the fact that they both had strep throat. Croaky-- but adorable.

Tell me why you love your "day job" (whatever that may be) in addition to who your favorite hero is and I'll enter your name in the drawing twice.

Hero - Roarke from the J.D. Robb books. He's capable, caring, dangerous, etc. etc. Of course tomorrow my favorite hero will be someone else. I'm fickle that way.

Why I love my day job? The financial well being of a company has so much to do with the quality of life possible for the people associated with the company. I like cheering a good company on.

Hero - Ororo Munro aka "Storm" of X-Men. There aren't that many African-American superheroes in the comic books to begin with, especially of the female variety. At a comic book convention a couple of years back, I got one of those 8 X 10 motivational placques with her picture on it and it says:

"ATTITUDE: Too positive to be doubtful..Too optimistic to be fearful...And too determined to be defeated."

She also controls the weather. How coolio is THAT?

I fell for Dare in Jo Beverley's To Rescue a Rogue, because he's got such a huge problem to overcome and he's just so damned honorable and earnest...and a great adoptive father.

I'm a library clerk---so I'm surrounded by thousands of books and over 800 kids. Never a dull moment. I love it when the kids come in to use the computers and I make them check out a book that they actually read.

Hi India! This one was easy.

1-Dr. Noah Praetorius, in People Will Talk. The dialogue makes me swoon, as does Cary Grant.

2-I'm an SLP who works with kiddos with a wide variety of physical and cognitive challenges. When they learn to put words together for the first time, life is good. :)

Alice, thanks for reminding me that I've got to read a J.D. Robb book. Where do you suggest I begin?

Gemini, you're my hero for reminding us that heros come in all flavors, including the female variety. If she controls the weather, my son will love her. He's all about controlling the weather!

Maggie, good job not letting those kids escape without a book! I need to check out your hero.

Beth, I love Dr. Praetorious! And I used to be a behavioral technician using Skinnerian therapy to teach language aquisition to autistic kids, so I know exactly what you mean.

Spike from the world of Buffy. Besides the obvious attributes -- those cheekbones, the six-pack, the wicked wit, the $2000 black leather coat -- he thinks outside the box. Despite being a vampire which means eeeeeeeeeevil!, he loves the world even though it had given him few advantages or kindness and this eventually leads to his hero's voyage for his soul which I found very compelling.

As for my day job, I hate it so "No comment." :-)

Sorry about the day job, Seton, but hey-good choice of hero!

As a kid I wasn't really encouraged to read books, but I remember one summer when Billie Jean King was my hero, then Dorothy Hamil, I even had my hair cut in that adorable pixie cut.

As I have gotten older I have begun to read those books that I missed out on, however, my favorite hero comes from a movie, Ardeth Bay, you know the really hot come to the rescue and save the day from The Mummy.

As to my day job, I am a stay at homeschool mom. I guess that says it all. It is the best job in the world.

Well, this will take no one by surprise: My fave hero is Mr. Darcy. Honorable, rich, handsome, flawed in fixable ways, and smart enough to love Elizabeth Bennet.

My day job - although it's usually an evening job, I do love being a librarian.

When I was younger, thinner, single, and wore makeup, I loved being out at clubs and parties and telling guys I was a librarian. Lots of great reactions.

I adore befriending quiet, awkward teens who remind me of myself at that age. And I like giving shushy setdowns to the obnoxious teens who remind me of my junior-high enemies. :)

How eeeeeeevil is that?

Hero: Jamie Fraser... Do I really have to explain why?

And how much did I love Jude Law's character in The Holiday?! He was so adorable with his kids!

Day job: Romance writer and slave to a mildly retarded, somewhat bulemic and very vocal Siamese cat... I love it!

My favorite hero: Gosh. I really go for the super-brainy guys. Maybe this says something about me, but Danny in "The Chosen" by Chaim Potok was the subject of a severe literary crush. So he was an extremely orthodox Hasidic Jew who would be uninterested in poor little goy me. Surely the fact that he was fictional was a larger barrier to our relationship. :)

I go for geeks. What can I say? Also--while I'm on the subject--Marcus on Babylon 5. Basically a socially awkward knight. Also a virgin, with so much of the angsty sexual panic that comes associated with it. Sigh. Ivanova was an IDIOT. An idiot, I tell you!

As for something I like about my day job: Every once in a great while, I get to help someone who really deserves it. Not very often, but when it happens, it's a really big deal--both for the person and for me, too. When I can do it, it's a phenomenal feeling.

Christinia, I'd love to see a pic of you with that Dorothy Hamill haircut! And your day job sounds awesome!

Tessa, Mr. Darcy? I'm shocked! I love the idea of you handing out the "shushy setdowns"!

Sara, another great hero choice. And another reply that makes me want to see a pic--of the cat.

CM, hmmm...wonder why you like smart heros. And I imagine that the rewards of your day job are indeed phenomenal.

Han Solo is my all-time favorite! I'm a big Rhett Butler fan, too.

As for Angel and Buffy -- give me Wesley Wyndham Pryce every time. Spike and Giles are for dessert ;-)

Oops. And I forgot the day-job part... (don't include me in the drawing, since I am a prior winner!)

I'm a project manager, and one of the best aspects of the job is that it is always changing. Something new every day, and I'm always learning something new. There are certainly down sides, as well, but those are the best parts.

My favorite hero is Prendergast from the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child themes. He's eccentric, loyal, and just brilliant. I'd marry him if he wasn't fictional!

My day job is stay at home mom. Now, this is after over 20 years of working full-time at other jobs that I loved. . . lab tech, cancer researcher, tech editor and tech writer. But, having the whole day to play (and write when I can find the time) has been a blast. That being said, I can't wait till they go to school! LOL!

India Carolina said...

Han Solo, siiigh. Sorry Chris, you're entered just like everyone else.

Ericka, congrats again on Crystal Clear! I bet you'll miss the little buggers once they start school. Arrgh! I don't know your hero. Will have to check him out.

I looove Gregory Peck!

Since Tessa stole my Mr. Darcy, I'm going to with Peter Parker. Not so much Tobey Maguire in the movies as the original comic book Peter - with that perfect combination of nerdy scientist and tortured superhero. Plus I think Spider-man gives UATW a whole new meaning! ;)

India Carolina said...

Lindsey, any kind of tortured hero works for me! But what is UATW?
