Small Conference: Big Opportunity

Checking in from Atlanta, Georgia and the Moonlight and Magnolias conference. Wow what a fabulous conference. Like Dallas, only more intimate.

As you may know, TWIST OF FATE made the MAGGIE finals. Darcy Burke's wonderful historical, GLORIOUS, is also a finalist. So that (and the finalist discount) enticed Darcy and me to Atlanta for the Georgia Romance Writer's Moonlight and Magnolias conference.

I just want to say a big thank you to the GRW for making us feel so welcome and for putting on such a great conference. Anyone who gets a chance to attend the M and M conference should do so. The workshops are of the same caliber as those at nationals. The smaller number of people attending, combined with the high quality of the programs, is a hard to beat combination.

Darcy and I have had the opportunity to meet and have extended conversations with many of our favorite authors. Madeline Hunter spoke with us at length about our manuscripts and offered up sage advice. And of course we got that fangirls pic (to be posted later).

For a dollar you can buy a raffle ticket and a chance to win a to-die-for critique from people like Erika Tsang, Brenda Novak, Kristin Nelson, Cindy Hwang, Rita Herron, Diana Love Snell, Mary Buckham and more.

Then there are the pitching opportunities. GRW has brought a number of top-drawer agents and editors together. The chance to pitch your book to them is worth the cost of the trip many times over.

I want to thank GRW once more, and say that I feel truly honored to have finaled in such a respected contest. Good luck tonight to Darcy and all my fellow finalists. Don't forget to check out Darcy's blog which should be up in about 48 hours.

Hi India - Congrats on your honorable mention! I read about it over on the mavens. :) This conference sounds like a great experience. Maybe next year (assuming I finish my WIP this year) I can attempt this one!

Best!

Ooh - love the new site look. Congrats on your honorable mention - plus I heard from Manda that you pitched like a pro! WTG! Glad it was such a great conference for everyone.

Boy, I wish I could enter the raffle. I'd love a critique from any of them.

Thanks for all the congrats, guys! I feel very honored to have been a Maggie finalist.

Marnee Jo, welcome! And although you do need a finished manuscript to enter the Golden Heart, you don't to enter the Maggie. So even if you're not quite done, I say go for it.

Isabel,
Great to "see" you. I'm looking forward to meeting you in SF next year!

Renee, Madeline was awesome! She pretended to be interested in our wips and gave us all kinds of great advice. Classy lady!

Lindsey, thanks so much. Aww, that was sweet of Manda. I'm rather proud of myself because I pitched to Deidre Knight without an appointment. She was incredibly gracious about it--and requested, so YAY! I guess the story makes a good one, so I'll share it.

All weekend I was wanting to pitch to DK, but I didn't have an appt. I kept looking for her and telling people I would screw up my courage and ask for a pitch if only I could find her. On Sat. I was standing in the hall and DK walked right up to me and asked if I knew how to get to a conference room. So I blurted out, "Y-y-y-you're Deidre Knight. I really wanted to pitch my story to you."
And she let me! I think this may fall under Tessa D's "work hard at being lucky" strategy.

Alice and Darcy, that Cindy Hwang critique was definitely worth the $10 I spent to stuff her box with 12 raffle tickets. I'm telling you, people, the M and M conference was sweeeet!

Thanks Cindy, and I'm looking forward to seeing you in print in the near future, as well!
